More than one in three adult Americans, 78 million people, are considered clinically obese. Globally, there are nearly 500 million obese and 1.5 billion overweight adults. Rates of obesity were relatively unchanged until the early 1980’s when prevalence exploded, with the rate of obesity more than doubling in the following two decades. Obesity has become an epidemic and is considered one of the largest health crises in the world.
Weight gain and obesity are caused by eating more calories than the body needs. Although the causes of obesity are not fully understood, it can be influenced by consumption of high fat foods, limited physical activity, portion size, genetic susceptibility and/or endocrine influences.
Currently, diet, exercise and weight loss drugs are the only treatment options available for the vast majority of overweight and obese individuals. A small subset of obese patients qualifies for bariatric surgery, but many fear the risks associated. There is a significant unmet need among those who have exhausted their efforts with diet alone, who do not qualify for or wish to avoid irreversible, surgical procedures. This group may be ideally suited for a non-surgical procedure, such as the ReShape Duo.
